Student Leaders Board- Constitution

BACKGROUND

Student Leaders Board (SLB) in Johore schools were formed on the basis of producing student leaders who will be potential exemplary leaders in school. The Johor Education Department feels that the time has come to develop a systematic plan to generate a generation of outstanding leaders in Johor. This is to prepare competitive human capital for the needs of the Iskandar Development Region. SLB also aspires to boost the performance of Johore schools and the excellence of its students. This is consistent with the selection criteria for high-performing schools in the country that clearly emphasizes these two essential elements.

OBJECTIVES

Create a group of young leaders in Johor who will create a legacy and new traditions in producing future generations of dynamic, innovative and creative leadership. Enhance leadership excellence among outstanding students through exposure to leadership skills such as effective communication in international and diplomatic relations. Develop benchmarking for all future leaders in Johore. Open avenues for top students in Johor to gain experience and understanding on the responsibilities expected of members of the body. To produce future leaders who are competitive and resilient in facing global issues and challenges. Produce individuals with a ‘global’ mindset'; who can think globally yet possess and demonstrate strong devotion to the country. To produce future leaders infused with a strong sentiment of patriotism and unwavering devotion to Johor.

MEMBERSHIP

1.Membership is opened to all students who possess excellent leadership potential.     2.Priority should be given to the following students: Form 4 students who are the main committee members of club,uniformed bodies and societies (with potential to lead these clubs, bodies or societies). Fluent In English Language. Excellent academic achievement (exceptions may be considered at the discretion of the school). Posses good oratory skills. Demonstrate high level of maturity in thinking and problem-solving. Active in sports and co-curricular activities. Practice good ethics and etiquette. Have keen interest and awareness on current issues at the global front. Well-versed on the history of the state and sultanate of Johor.        If the students being nominated do not meet the criteria mentioned above, but show high leadership potential, it is then the responsibility of the school to guide these students towards achieving those required criteria.

TEACHER ADVISOR

Teacher Advisors are the Internationalisation of Schools Programme Coordinators.   Deal directly with the Principal of school.  Co-operate with the Head of International Relations, Johor State Education Department.  Given the mandate to monitor the internationalisation activities in school.  Has the authority to cancel any international activities of the school when deem necessary.  To always be present during interviews and board meetings.  Responsible for conducting interviews to select candidates.  Manage the extra-curriculum evaluation scoring.

COMMITTE

A committee will be established to streamline the management of SLB The body will be elected at the Annual General Meeting or, if necessary, convene an emergency general meeting. The selection committee is a voting member. Members who attend should be nominated as a member of the committee while those who could not attend but  provided a letter to show cause of absence can be nominated as members of the committee. The committee will consist of the following committee members:   (i) President        -Have full responsibilities of managing the Student Leaders Board.  (ii) Vice President       -Assisting the President in managing the Student Leaders Board.       -Acting as chairman in the absence of the President.  (iii) Secretary      -Issue the letter of appointment signed by the committee members and certified by the Principal of school.      -Issue calling letters for board meeting and prepare minutes of the meeting.      -Prepare activity reports for SLB.      -Prepare membership list and record the attendance.  (iv) Deputy Secretary     -Assist the secretary in administering the Board. (v) Treasurer      -Manage financial matters and prepare annual financial reports for Student Leaders Board.  (vi) Assistant Treasurer      -Help treasurer in managing the financial affairs of the body.  (vii) Public Relations Officer     -Disseminate information and promote the activities of the Body through various media.      -Initiate relationship with neighbouring countries via internationalisation activities.  (viii) The members of the Committee     -Co-operate with key members in ensuring the success of the international activities in school.      -Those who wish to resign must send a resignation letter with valid reason to the Teacher Advisor.

Meeting/Attendance  Meetings need to be held at least once every fortnight or when the need arises. Members are required to   accumulate 85% or more attendance.  The role & responsibility of Student Leaders Board (SLB) • Coordinate international activities in school, inclusive of following tasks  i. prepare list of committee (among students);  ii. give talk on school;  iii. prepare programme booklet for domestic and international excursions;  iv. entertain foreign guests; provide souvenirs for guests (with the assistance of the school); prepare food and beverages for the guests (with the help of the school) provide cultural entertainment (if necessary); ensure the cleanliness of school; Prepare report (to be submitted to the Director of the Johor State Education Department - International Relations Officer) Develop the English version of the school website (with the assistance of the school ICT Coordinator). It is compulsory to conduct at least one internationalisation activity, i.   Inter-school competition with schools from neighbouring countries; ii.  Excursion to neighbouring countries; iii. Organise sports matches (football, badminton, hockey etc.) with one or more schools     from neighbouring countries; iv. Hold lectures or talk on global issue v.  Organise global forum with special guest speaker from abroad. vi. Conduct suitable activities with neighbouring countries in fostering mutual      understanding. vii.Cultural and arts partnerships with schools from the neighbouring countries. such as: -   •Coordinate activities that can enhance students’ leadership qualities.   • Be a role model to other students in school.   • Develop creative and innovative thinking that will benefit the school community, especially fellow students.   Scoring/Evaluation   • Student Leaders Board members are eligible for bonus points (seven marks).   • Scores will be based on student’s co-curricular involvement in activities that are managed by the body.   • Scores of involvement at the international level (maximum 20 marks) will be given to each member who is involved    in the activities undertaken by the body, for international activities conducted locally or internationally.   • Points will be awarded on the involvement of co-curricular activities of their respective uniformed bodies.
